"Response to persons in distress has long been an honorable, charitable tradition. The professionals in search and rescue have carried on this tradition of helping others by dedicating time, information, skills, equipment and funding to the relief of suffering".                (from www.NASAR.ORG)

The Port Richmond CERT and Rescue Team on Staten Island has 13 members who are NASAR (National Association for Search and Rescue) certified.

The Boro of Staten Island has been nicknamed “The Boro of Parks”.  Based on the island’s demographics, the Port Richmond CERT and Rescue decided to expand its search and rescue training beyond the basic CERT curriculum.  As a result of its SARTECH II and SARTECH III credentials, members of the team have taken part in several searches in New Jersey.  The team assisted the NYPD in a local search on Staten Island as well.

Port Richmond CERT and Rescue meets on the grounds of the Seaview Hospital and Rehabilitation Center on Staten Island.  The grounds offer extensive field exercises that will continue to hone the skills of its members.

The team is looking forward to additional training through its liaisons with other local volunteer groups, the Boy Scouts of America, and a summer class with the Department of Environmental Conservation.
